Are Reporters Kocharyan's Hope?
Robert Kocharyan's presence at the opening of the church built by
Gagik Tsarukyan in Abovyan gave a surprise. He almost did not talk to
Serzh Sargsyan, and when Tsarukyan asked to wait `till the president
comes' he said, `Who?' It was almost a sacral question because one of
the `presidents' was already there, Tsarukyan meant Lukashenko.
Asked by reporters about his return to politics, he said, `Do you want
me to return?' The reporters said, `Mr. Kocharyan, you are in politics
but you are not visible.' He replied back, `What makes you think that
I am there but I'm not visible?'
Strange though it may seem, Robert Kocharyan remains the president of
Armenia. He created an anti-constitutional economic and political
system for ten years which culminated in 1 March 2008 in the context
of transfer of power. Kocharyan `was there and was visible'.
He left the office but the anti-constitutional system created by him
still rules in Armenia. The so-called new government has been unable
to set up a different system and continues to act in the same logic
and mechanisms. In this case the examples of developed countries are
not pertinent because those countries are constitutional.
After leaving his office Kocharyan preferred being there but not being
visible, trying to promote his own political programs indirectly, also
with foreign assistance like in the period when he came to power.
Therefore, everyone is focused on him because it is not clear where
the brunt will come from, keeping tension and mystery. This could be
an effective option, considering the nature and scope of his
`heritage' in public like which have not been overcome so far. In
addition, not only they haven't been overcome but also the government
and other groups do not seem willing to overcome. It is favorable and
easy to keep privileges and ascribe failures to the `heritage'.
Therefore, Kocharyan remains the president of Armenia. At the same
time, Kocharyan's plans fail in Armenia and abroad. However, he does
not seem willing to come to the public field, trying to keep its power
and recognizing the nature of the system created by him.
`What makes you think that I am there but I'm not visible?' he asked
the reporters. Here is an almost a Shakespearean question which
mankind has not answered yet. However, such a question is not
pertinent in politics. Either one is there or one is not there. As of
now, Kocharyan's question, independent from his will, is with what
expressions and what algorithms and under what circumstances. He would
like to keep this mysterious situation for a long time, and reporters
are helpful to him, keeping his `memory' alive for so many years.
