Armenian minister says Iranian gas pipeline plan less effective
16:24 - 22.05.13
The maintenance of a 40-kilometer-long pipeline transporting the
Iranian natural gas to Armenia would make absolutely no sense as
HayRusgazard, with its 1,800-km-long high pressure pipeline had all
the structural subdivisions and equipment to supply gas to the
population, according to the minister of energy and natural resources.
In his speech the US Embassy-held conference devoted to the future of
Armenia's energy sector, Armen Movsisyan said the maintenance of a
longer a gas pipeline would require additional structures.
"I have explained once and explain again that maintaining a 40-km-long
gas pipeline means having corresponding structures to make its
operation possible. Whereas we had a company which had all those
structural subdivisions, equipment and supplies. Hence, it doesn't
simply make sense to create a new structure,' he said.
Asked why the government failed, over the past years, to create
alternative resources to prevent the dependence on Russia, the
minister answered that he doubts it would have been possible to seek
such solutions in the region. As for the Iranian gas, he said it
wouldn't offer any alternative, its price being higher compared to
Russia.
The minister further denied the report that Russia is going to sell
the Vorotan hydropower plant to make government's subsidization plan
possible. But he declined to give a specific clarification as to the
measures the government is going to take to cover 30% of the gas
import expenses. Movsisyan said only that the negotiations are still
in progress.
`After they sum up [the results], we will say how the problems will be
resolved,' he said.
