Turks face challenge to recognize Genocide

Every single person residing in Turkey has a duty to the victims of
the 1915 events, Murhatan Mungan, a writer of a Kurdish and Arab
decent, has said at the Democracy and Peace Party's conference.
He made the remark when referring to 2015 as the 100th anniversary of
the Armenian Genocide.
A major topic on the conference's agenda was the Kurdish issue, but
the participants also addressed the problems of the ethnic Armenians
residing in Turkey.
`We do not have only Turks and Kurds residing in this country; we have
also Armenians. And we all owe to the 1915 victims. We ought to pay
off that debt in 2015,' Mungan said.
Similar calls had been earlier voiced by the Turkish novelist Orhan
Pamuk, the late editor-in-chief of the Turkish-Armenian weekly Agos,
Hrant Dink, his widow Rachel, as well as professors, writers, and
intellectuals of Armenian, Turkish and Kurdish decent.
According to Agos, the conference has brought together over 200
scholars, intellectuals, members of political parties and NGOs.
The event, which opened Monday, will continue later today. The
participants have been divided into groups to introduce two different
reports which will later serve as grounds for a final statement.
