GLENDALE, CALIF. - Local renowned artist Seeroon Yeretzian received
the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Diamond Awards for
Achievement in the Arts in Glendale.
The award was given by the City of Glendale, Library Arts & Culture
Department and the Arts & Culture Commission on April 29 at a ceremony
held at the Glendale Central Library Auditorium.
Seeroon Yeretzian, recently diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease),
has spent the last 30 years of her life actively creating and
promoting art. She is the founder and director of Roslin Art Gallery
which exhibits the work of Armenian artists from around the world.
Seeroon is well-known for her art inspired by the Medieval Armenian
illuminated manuscripts, especially for her recreations of the
Armenian alphabet in colorful ornate initials. Her art album and
poetry book were recently published by the Abril Publishing Company.
The ceremony included a dinner reception and a piano performance by
Arman Keyvanian. Awards were also presented to Ruben Avoian for Young
Artist, Srboohie Abajian for Artist, and the Xpress Art Center for
Community Partner, among others.
Teri Deaver, the chair of the Arts & Culture Commission, made the
opening remarks and personally presented the Lifetime Achievement
Award to Seeroon. Here is the complete speech she gave before
welcoming Seeroon to the stage:
"I am deeply honored to have this opportunity to present the Lifetime
Achievement Award to Seeroon Yeretzian. In preparing my remarks I
began to wonder what exactly is it that sets a person, an artist
apart, that elevates them to a level that compels a community peer to
nominate them for this distinction? And what is it that invites a
committee to concur and bestow this award? I took a deep look at
Seeroon's work and achievements, and quickly realized that her story
was my answer.
Seeroon has an exceptional body of work and an unrelenting passion for
social justice that cries out from the canvas, her sculptures and her
written works. She illuminates and celebrates her heritage and culture
in all its variations and complexity. Her works, draw us in, break
down barriers and give us the opportunity to become a better people.
And she has not remained content merely as a creator of visual work
but has found creative expression in music and poetry, and has reached
out as an active member of the community. She has worked with youth,
inspiring another generation to learn the art form of Armenian
calligraphy. As an artist entrepreneur, in 1995 she established the
Roslin Art Gallery that continues to add to the vitality of downtown,
a remarkable tenure for any small business and particularly one that
is arts focused.
She has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows here in
California, nationally as well as internationally. A notable
achievement in itself, as any artist will tell you. And many will
recognize her Armenian Alphabet, a piece that was transferred to
poster, and which adorns the walls of many homes and which I will
proudly add, I happen to have as well.
Serrano is a role model. She works from her heart, her experiences and
from her creatively driven, compassionate soul, to produce works that
offer us a deep and uncompromising look at humanity. And she has
succeeded both as full time artist and as a businesswoman all as a
singular extension of herself. In her words 'My art is me,
indefinable, multiple, variable. It stands on it's own as a body of
Art, Individual works are it's limbs'.
Thank you Seeroon for sharing your art and yourself with us so
passionately over these many years. And for contributing to and
enhancing the City of Glendale through your clarity of vision, your
depth of creative work, your personal investment and your commitment
to the community. It is my honor to present you with the Diamond Award
for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts."
Formed in 1999, the mission of the Arts & Culture Commission is to
enrich the human experience, reinforce Glendale's identity and civic
pride through arts and culture, and to recognize the importance of
arts to our quality of life and to the local economy. This is
accomplished by consciously integrating arts and culture into the
daily life of the people of Glendale through urban design, planning,
economic development, and education.
