Speaking to reporters today political analyst Levon Shirinyan referred
to the statement of colonel of Russian 102d military base in Armenia
Andrey Ruzinsky.
`This statement may be explained in two ways. I think Russia is trying
to keep the military balance between Armenia and Azerbaijan and
secondly it was a message to Turkey and not Azerbaijan,' he said. The
colonel in an interview to Russian paper did not exclude the
engagement of Russian military base in the military activities in case
of war in Karabakh.
`If the Azerbaijani leadership decides to restore the control over
Karabakh through war, the Russian military base in Armenia may
participate in the war within the framework of the CSTO,' Ruzinsky
said.
Shirinyan said the Armenian army will easily beat the Azerbaijani one,
if Turkey does not assist it. The analyst said Russia will interfere
in case of war and for it Armenia is to pay a price. `This price was
president's statement on September 3 about Armenia's membership to
Customs Union,' he said.
