CUSTOMS UNION NEW WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARMENIA

    13:30 ~U 06.11.13

Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan has described Armenia's membership in
the Eurasian Customs Union as a new window opportunity for the country.

In an interview with the Ukrainian website segodnya.ua, the head of
Armenia's cabinet said that the successful negotiations and studies
have paved the country's way to applying for a membership.

"It is no secret to anyone that the absence of a common border with
the Customs Union necessitates serious studies. It is no secret that
Russia is a key trade partner and investor for us, with the goods
manufactured in Armenia being mainly realized on the Russian market.

So it is obvious that the isolation from the Eurasian regional process
will lead to a loss of competitiveness and what's even more, cause
restrictions on our cooperation, preventing our strategic alliance
within the Collective Security Treaty Organization," he noted.

The premier said a huge potential has been frozen on the post-Soviet
territory, adding that Armenian companies are interested in making
their local market maximum accessible to the Customs Union.

"The high level of integration with the CUB member states, including
the lifting of technical barriers in trade, will certainly promote the
economic growth in Armenia. But there are certain risks: the tariffs in
the CU are more than twice higher compared to our customs duties with
third countries. But we see in general that Armenia will gain benefits
from joining the CU and the United Economic Zone," Sargsyan added.
