MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE 3) Former world champion Nonito `The
Filipino Flash' Donaire overcame a slow start to once again defeat
Armenian fighter Vic `The Raging Bull' Darchinyan in their highly
anticipated rematch Saturday in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Donaire defeated Darchinyan when they first fought in July 2007 at the
flyweight division, knocking out the then-unbeaten Armenian in the
fifth round in a bout that announced his entrance to boxing stardom.
In a 10-round match that served as the featherweight debut for both
men, it was the 37-year-old Darchinyan who seized control in the
middle rounds as he was the busier fighter. At the end of the fifth
round, he staggered Donaire with a flurry of punches in the final
seconds, and the Filipino boxer had to be saved by the bell.
Darchinyan was still the busier fighter in the sixth until the eighth
round, and his work started to show as Donaire began the ninth round
with blood flowing out of his nose. But Donaire finally turned on the
aggression in that round, staggering Darchinyan with a huge left hook
that sent him to his knees.
The Armenian beat the 10-count but was clearly on wobbly legs. Donaire
landed more power shots, eventually pushing Darchinyan to the corner
where he unloaded several more blows that prompted the referee to
finally stop the fight.
Donaire was awarded a technical knockout victory at the 2:06 mark of
the ninth round.
He immediately dedicated the victory to his native Philippines, where
more than 10,000 are feared dead in the wake of Super Typhoon Yolanda
(international name: Haiyan).
"First and foremost, prayers to people in the Philippines who were hit
by the typhoon," he said. "Please have your prayers for people in the
Philippines."
`I tried to work on a different style, which is going back,' said
Donaire, adding that he was advised by his corner to `box and be
smart.' `But part of my body still memorized the fighting style, which
worked in the end.'
It was Donaire's first fight since losing to Rigondeaux in April, and
he admitted that he battled some moments of self-doubt especially when
Darchinyan connected on some heavy punches.
`When he hit me in the cheek, I felt like he broke my cheek, and I
thought, 'Is this it for me? I'm losing the fight. Should I keep
going?'' said Donaire, who raised his firstborn son, Jarel, when he
was announced the winner.
`But I put my heart into it, and you know what, I will never ever quit.'
It was a slow start for both men, although they briefly opened up in
the second round when Donaire staggered Darchinyan inside the final
minute, only to see Darchinyan respond with shots of his own.
Darchinyan, however, landed the flashier shots in the middle rounds,
and was able to neutralize Donaire's vaunted left hook - the punch
that had knocked him out in the first fight - using a high guard.
It was a sorry loss for Darchinyan, who had been leading on two cards
at the time of the stoppage, while the other card was a draw. Once
Donaire was able to pierce his guard, the end came quickly for
Darchinyan, who suffered his sixth professional loss to drop to 39-6-1
with 28 knockouts.
Donaire, meanwhile, improved his record to 32 wins against two losses,
and announced after the fight that he intends to seek a rematch
against Cuban boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux, who dominated him when they
fought in April and handed him his first loss in 11 years.
