Armenia nuclear plant's dry spent fuel storage facility to be operated
until 2020

YEREVAN. - The dry spent fuel storage (DSFS) facility of theArmenia's
Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) will be operated until 2020.
As the Armenian Government's State Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee
informs, the government has granted a proper license for the operation
of the fuel storage facility until 2020, `EcoLur' NGO reports.
The storage facility is classified as NUHOMS-56 located on the
Armenian NPP site. NUHOMS-56 is placed into horizontal storage
modules. The DSFS consists of eleven horizontally placed concrete
modules for the storage of 616 spent fuel assemblies.
In 2005, and based on a proposal from the government, the National
Assembly of Armenia passed a decision to extend the dry spent fuel
storage. Now, it will enable to store 1,890 fuel assemblies for at
least fifty years.
