POLITICAL EXPERT: AZERBAIJAN IS NOT SERBIA AND THE SOUTH CAUCASUS IS NOT SOUTHERN EUROPE

Azerbaijan is not Serbia and the South Caucasus is not Southern
Europe. Subsequently, one should not expect Baku to be as reasonable
in the Karabakh peace process as Belgrade is in the Kosovo issue,
political expert Yervand Bozoyan said during the Nov 15 public debates
"Karabakh Conflict: Dynamics and Perspectives" held at the Caucasus
Institute in Yerevan.
"Today there are two paths to be chosen by the conflicting parties.
The first path is to continue the negotiations in the current format
and the second one is to give them up and start a new war. Given that
nobody needs war now, the only path is to continue the talks. However,
it is rather hard and even impossible to succeed in the talks in the
current format and balance of forces", said Bozoyan.
Bozoyan thinks that the Azeri public is not ready for a compromising
option, needless to say about the Azeri authorities. Subsequently,
the conflict has much deeper roots that it seems to have. The expert
recalled that the problems in the relations between Armenians and
Azeris were removed by the Russian Empire and later by the USSR,
which created the Transcaucasus Federation and forced the displeased
keep silence. However, after the collapse of the USSR the old problem
came to the fore at once. "And today the threat of a new war will have
a multiplier effect and cover the other countries around the South
Caucasus as well. This is the main threat of a new Karabakh war",
he said.
