HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION IN THE MILITARY DISCUSSED IN YEREVAN

    12:20 ~U 23.10.13

The protection of human rights in the military was discussed Tuesday at
the Ministry of Defense at a meeting as Deputy Minister Ara Nazaryan
received a delegation led by Nils Muiznieks, the Council of Europe's
    Commissioner for Human Rights.

Greeting the guests, the Armenian official said that the Ministry
is ready to deepen the constructive dialogue with the Council in an
effort to strengthen the capacities of human rights protection in
    the armed forces.

The amendments to the Republic of Armenia Law "On Alternative
Military Service" and the inquest procedures into non-combat deaths
were discussed at the meeting upon the guests' request. The sides also
talked of the civil society activeness in the process and possibilities
    of cooperation with the ombudsman.

Nazaryan further briefed the delegation on the awareness raising
efforts in the military and the steps towards introducing a subject
on human rights in educational institutions.

At the end, the commissioner thanked the deputy minister for responding
    properly to the questions raised.
