Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said several days prior to his
term ending he regretted that the new Georgian authorities stopped
the construction of fortification facilities around Tbilisi, which
he began in 2008.
"We have constructed concrete bunkers at all heights around Tbilisi,
from which the city is well-protected from the north side. Then we
considered the possibility of Russians attacking from their bases
deployed in Armenia and have started constructing fortifying facilities
on the southern approaches to Tbilisi. Seventy percent of the works
have been completed," Saakashvili told reporters on Wednesday.
"Only a few kilometers of tank traps remained until the project was
canceled under the current authorities," the president said.
Suspending the fortification works is "sabotage" Saakashvili said. "I
also think that the Georgian people should know about this," he said.
