HAYKAKAN ZHAMANAK: CARREFOUR NOT TO OPEN HYPERMARKET IN ARMENIA DUE TO EMIGRATION?
October 29, 2013
YEREVAN. - The volume of emigration from Armenia can become an
additional cause for the world-renowned French Carrefour hypermarket
chain not to open a hypermarket in Armenia, Haykakan Zhamanak daily
reports.
"An Armenian Economy Ministry official gave such information to our
correspondent.
"Carrefour was to open a hypermarket in Armenia-at Dalma Mall [in
capital cityYerevan]-one year ago. But due to artificial barriers,
Carrefour decided to open a hypermarket at Yerevan Mall, which is
still under construction. This has already had a negative impact on
the process of opening the hypermarket.
"And now, studying the actual volume of emigration from Armenia, the
Carrefour specialists have found that the population [in the country]
is not enough for their normal activities.
"The Economy Ministry official [also] informed that Carrefour is not
so enthusiastic-to say the least-also about the prospect of Armenia's
accession to the Customs Union because as a result, the existing
customs procedure for imported goods will substantially change,"
Haykakan Zhamanak writes.
