ARMENIAN PRESIDENT DISCUSSES WITH CLERICS WAYS FOR HELPING SYRIAN ARMENIANS
YEREVAN, August 30. /ARKA/. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan talked
to Catholicos Garegin the Second, Armenian Apostolic Church leader,
and Catholicos Aram the First, the head of Cilicia Seat, today by
telephone and discussed issues related to assistance for Syrian
Armenians, the president's press office reports.
Ways to protect the Armenian community and diplomats in Syria were
discussed as well.
The president and the clerics decided to unite their efforts to do
whatever possible for Syrian Armenians.
Cilicia Seat in Antelias, Lebanon, is one of Armenian Apostolic
Church's seats.
The Armenian community in Syria numbers at various estimates 100,000
people. The largest community is in Aleppo (60,000). Armenians also
live in Damascus, Latakia and other cities.
Clashes between government troops and armed opposition in Syria have
forced many Armenians to flee their homes.
