NAGORNO-KARABAKH'S SECURITY ARMENIA'S PRIORITY TASK
14:13 05.09.13
Ex-member of Armenia's Parliament Vardan Bostanjyan told journalists on
Thursday that national interests are Armenia's foreign policy priority.
And Armenia's priority task in deciding in favor of joining the Customs
Union was to ensure the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic's (NKR) security.
"Other tasks are of secondary importance. Under the circumstances,
Armenia is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization
(CSTO) and we can defend ourselves following the principles,"
Bostanjyan said.
According to him, Armenia's artificial behavior is pregnant with
surprises. Under the circumstances the country's foreign policy must
never affect any states' interests.
With respect to Armenia's possible economic losses in case it joins
the Customs Union, Bostanjyan considers them "relative."
"We cannot create a commodity group of certain interest to the European
market," he said.
As regards the possibility of Armenia signing agreements with both
the European Union (EU) and Customs Union, Bostanjyan said: "Nothing
can be ruled out. All the powerful sides should realize the fact that
we can cooperate with others."
As regards Armenia's decision to join the Customs Union, Bostanjyan
does not dare view it in the context of blackmail. He noted that
Armenia's steps must not make any of the sides angry. "We must adopt
European values," he added.
As regards European officials' response to Armenia's decision,
Bostanjyan said that they cannot rule out that Armenia will in any
case launch reforms in conformity with European standards. "Do we
have to be within a domain to be able to implement reforms?"
With respect to public protests against Armenia's decision, Bostanjyan
said: "We have so many organizations, sects and so on in our country.
Do you want a male to marry a male? I think of my country's security."
