ARMENIAN LEADER OF ISTANBUL'S BESIKTAS SUPPORTERS' GROUP IS ARRESTED

ISTANBUL. - Numerous members--including leaders--of Istanbul's Beşiktaş
J.K., Galatasaray S.K., and Fenerbahce S.K. supporters were arrested
Friday morning.
Eighty supporters of the three well-known clubs were taken into
custody, reports Milliyet daily of Turkey.
Among them is Istanbul-Armenian Alen Markaryan, the supporters'
leader of Beşiktaş's Carşı Group.
Turkey's Minister of Interior Muammer Guler noted that the arrestees
are suspected of committing organized crimes among the supporters.
To note, Beşiktaş's Carşı Group is known for its active participation
in anti-government demonstrations.
Alen Markaryan, who is born in 1966 in Istanbul, directs the Carşı
Group--which was founded in 1982--during the football and basketball
matches of Beşiktaş J.K. Carşı Group is known for its unique shows
during the matches.
