ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT HAS NEW SPEAKER
YEREVAN, April 29. / ARKA /. Galust Sahakyan, a veteran member of
the governing Republican Party of Armenia, was elected today as a
new speaker of the National Assembly (parliament).
The post was contended also by a former prime minister Hrant
Bagratyan from the opposition Armenian National Congress, who was a
self-nominated candidate.
Galust Sahakyan was backed by 101 deputies of the 131-member
parliament. Bagratyan was endorsed by three deputies. Two ballots
were invalidated.
The National Assembly speaker is elected by secret ballot. To be
elected, a candidate must receive a simple majority of votes.
The ruling Republican Party of Armenia controls 70 seats in the
legislature. Galust Sahakyan replaces Hovik Abrahamyan who was
nominated April 13 by the president as a prime minister. He replaced
in turner Tigran Sargsyan who resigned on April 3. -0-
