Armenia sees its population dwindle by another 7,300 people this year
YEREVAN, July 31. / ARKA /. Armenia saw its population dwindle by
another 7,300 people as of July 1, compared with the beginning of the
year, to 3.009.8 million, according to the latest numbers released
today by the National Statistical Service (NSS).
Some 1.911.9 million lived in urban areas and 1.097.9 million in rural
areas. The latest population census in the country was conducted in
2011.
The drop, according to the official figures, resulted from negative
migration balance when the number of people leaving the country was
higher than the natural population growth.
Nonetheless, the number of babies born in January - June 2014 was said
to have increased by 3.2% compared with the same period in 2013,
amounting to 19,401. The number of deaths also increased by 4.3% to
14,929. The resulting natural growth was 4, 472 people.
According to official number, provided by the border management
system, 2.243 million people crossed the Armenian border in both
directions in the first half, up from 1.938.9 million trips in the
same period in 2013.
It was said that 1.078.202 million entered the country (an increase of
almost 17 percent over the same period in 2013), while the number of
departures upped by 14.5 percent to 1,164,071. -0-
