letter to AJC received this week, thanked the global Jewish
organization for its April 23rd statementcommemorating the victims of
the Meds Yeghern.
The full text of the April 29th letter from President Sargsyan to AJC follows:
To American Jewish Committee
New York City, USA
We, Armenians, children of the nation that survived the catastrophe of
Genocide, are grateful to all countries, organizations and individuals
who put universal human values above short-term political and economic
considerations of the day and explicitly recognize and condemn this
horrendous crime against humanity. Historical memory and unbiased
assessment of the past are important not only for being values, but
also for their role in preventing this kind of crimes from happening
again in the future.
Armenians and Jews have a special mission to carry out in order to
prevent such atrocities. Our two peoples, as well as [the]
international community as a whole, have to stand unanimously against
denial, the final stage of any genocide.
I find it equally important to fight against the concepts that nurture
such crimes.Only through joint efforts can we eradicate racism,
xenophobia, anti-Semitism, hate propaganda and similar vicious
phenomena that inevitably lead to crimes against humanity.
I express my deep gratitude to American Jewish Committee for
recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide. Your support is
especially appreciated as we approach the Centennial of the Genocide.
Very sincerely,
Serzh Sargsyan
President of the Republic of Armenia
