ARMENIA TO SPEND AN ADDITIONAL OF 175MLN DRAMS TO MODERNIZE AREAL
YEREVAN, August 22. /ARKA/. Armenia will appropriate extra 175 million
drams to modernize the AREAL linear accelerator as part of the CANDLE
project, the country's minister of education and science Armen Ashotyan
said at a government meeting on Thursday.
The accelerator was launched a couple of weeks ago, which is a major
scientific achievement, Ashotyan said. Now additional funds are needed
to modernize science infrastructures, he said.
According to the minister, the modernization will bring the output
of the accelerator up to 20 megaelectron volt. At the same time,
the research and production facilities of the project, as well as
the laboratory will be upgraded, he said.
CANDLE (Center for Advancement of Natural Discoveries Using Light
Emission) is a project to create a source of synchrotron radiation
of the third generation. The accelerator will enable scientists
conducting fundamental research in physics, chemistry, biology,
medicine, pharmaceutics, nanoelectronics, micro-production and many
other areas. The project consists of two phases. The first phase is
commissioning of AREAL linac. A circular accelerator is to be built
in the second phase.
Currently, there are more than 40 light sources in the world, located
in the U.S., Western Europe and Japan . According to experts, they
annually generate $750 billion of income. ($1 - 407.79drams). -0--
