Head of think-tank says the government set to cut tax evasion by 15
percent this year
YEREVAN, August 25 / ARKA /. Tatul Manaseryan, the head of a
Yerevan-based think-tank called 'Alternative' says the Armenian
government is determined to cut tax evasion by around 10-15 percent
this year.
One month after his appointment as prime minister in April, Hovik
Abrahamian issued a deadline to more than 100 wealthy businesspeople
until July 1 to stop underreporting their earnings or face a tough
crackdown by tax authorities.
According to Manaseryan, who spoke at a news conference today, 100
days that have passed since Abrahamyan's appointment are not enough
for the government to reduce dramatically the shadow turnover, but 'if
the government is consistent, the results will be seen very soon."
Visiting a youth camp last Monday, prime minister Abrahamyan said he
needs more time to improve tax collection.
"Tax collection means that business people lose money, and there are
no people who give away money easily. We need more time to overcome
this difficulty," he was quoted as saying by the government.
Manaseryan praised today the prime minister for traveling across the
country to have a better idea about the economic situation and its
challenges.
"I think that if the authorities are consistent in their steps, then
this year it will be possible to register a 10-15% reduction in the
shadow economy", said Manaseryan.
According to a report by Armenia's Human Rights Defender, the shadow
economy in Armenia is about 35-40% .- 0--
