Armenian oppositionist says smooth drastic reforms possible

    16:11 * 26.08.14

Armenia's parliamentary opposition is able to carry out drastic
reforms without repeating Ukraine's Maidan scenario, an opposition
    lawmaker said.

"We do not have any changes on our political agenda. I would, of
course, refrain from words such as 'heated' or 'sharp', but it is
actually the [opposition] quartet that proposes a real alternative
today," Ruben Hakobyan, the leader of the opposition Heritage faction
in parliament, told reporters on Tuesday.

Noting that their earlier reform plan (proposing 12 clauses) remained
unfulfilled by the authorities, the poliitician said he believes that
the parliamentary minority (Heritage, ARF-D, Armenian National
Congress, and Prosperous Armenia) has to have an adequate response to
    that.

But he did not elaborate on the date of the possible meeting among the
opposition leaders. Hakobyan said only that their promised rally will
    take place on September 30.

Asked whether the Heritage party agrees that the cabinet led by Prime
Minister Hovik Abrahamyan has failed to meet its targets, the
opposition MP said that they did not have positive expectations from
    the very beginning.

But he said it doesn't make sense to demand the government's
resignation today. "If the September 30 [rally] doesn't take place,
we, as [members of] Heritage, will demand a change of government. We
are obliged to raise the issue," he added.
