SOME 300 TONS OF WHITEFISH REMAIN IN ARMENIA'S LARGEST LAKE SEVAN
YEREVAN, December 8. / ARKA /. Some 300 metric tons of whitefish remain
in Armenia's largest Lake Sevan now as much as in late 2013, according
to Bardukh Gabrielyan, the head of Hydro and Zoology Research Center,
an affiliation of the National Academy of Sciences.
Speaking at a news conference today, he said the reserves of the
whitefish are showing a very little sign of increase, unlike the
reserves of crucian carp that have almost doubled. According to him,
the situation is different regarding the reserves of trout, which is
the main target of poachers.
"There is no a clear-cut methodology for establishing the accurate
reserves of trout. In Armenia this species is void of natural
self-reproduction, because the trout spawning usually occurs in rivers,
near the coast, where the illegal fishing is made," Gabrielyan said.
He said in order to maintain and increase the reserves of whitefish
and trout in Sevan the government needs to extend the fishing ban
period at least from November to January.
Under the law, today the ban is effective from December 10 to December
25, while spawning begins somewhere in the middle of September and
lasts until January.
According to a joint study, conducted by Armenian and Russian
researchers, in 1983 the lake held around 11,000 tons of fish, which
dwindled to 625 tons in 2005, to 253 tons in 2006, growing to 278
tons in 2009.
Lake Sevan, one of the largest alpine lakes in Europe and Asia,
is located in the heart of the Armenian plateau, at an altitude of
1914 meters. The lake stretches over 70 kilometers from northwest to
southeast. Its water surface area is nearly 1500 square kilometers.
The lake is the main source of drinking water in the region. By 2030,
the lake's level is to rise to 1903.5 meters. -0-
