MILITARY BASE ALONE WILL NOT PROTECT RUSSIAN INTERESTS IN ARMENIA, EXPERT CLAIMS

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Armenian-Russian cooperation in security sector,
in particular, the presence of the military base in Gyumri bears
importance for both Armenia and Russia.
Senior Research Fellow at the Center for the Regional Security and
Caucasus Studies of the Moscow State Institute of International
Relations (MGIMO) Nikolai Silayev stated it in Yerevan today.
"Russia-Armenia: Integration against the Backdrop of Global Crisis"
expert report of the Institute for International Studies (IIS) at
MGIMO was presented in Yerevan today.
The expert believes along with cooperation in the security sector
bilateral cooperation in economic and humanitarian sectors should
also be developed and strengthened as the presence of the military
base alone cannot protect Russian interests in Armenia.
"The ties should be multi-pronged and should be built in various
sectors", noted Nikolai Silayev.
