HAYRIKYAN: HERITAGE IS ONLY OPPOSITION PARTY IN TROIKA

Nothing should be expected from the three non-governing parties,
and only Heritage can be considered an opposition among this troika,
Soviet-era dissident Paruyr Hayrikyan told reporters today.

The leader of the National Self-Determination Union (NSDU) arrived at
this conclusion considering the outcome of last week's parliamentary
vote on the European Economic Union (EEU) membership treaty.

"It is useless to speak about either the Armenian National Congress
(ANC) or the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) [as opposition]. We may
say that except for the NSDU and Heritage all forces are for EEU
membership," said Hayrikyan, who was a candidate in Armenia's 2013
presidential election and then considering himself to be the only
    opponent of the current president.

In response to ArmeniaNow's observation that the Troika parties gather
more people at their rallies than the NSDU does at the protests against
the EEU, Hayrikyan made the following comparison: "I was at a wedding
party attended by 20 guests, and that family lives happily with five
children, and I was at a wedding party with around 2,000 guests,
and there was nothing left from that marriage two years later."

It is noteworthy that the ANC and PAP leaders in their speeches
referred to the EEU membership question saying that it is inevitable
and that they voted in favor of joining the Russian-led economic
grouping in order not to harm the state.

In 2013 the NSDU Party and State for Human Rights NGO conducted a
survey the results of which, according to them, show that 70 percent
of the population are against Armenia's membership in the Customs
Union and are more in favor of association with the EU.

Last week Armenia's 131-seat parliament voted 103 to 7, with one
abstention to ratify the treaty on the country's membership in the
EEU that includes Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

According to the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, the vote reflected
    the people's opinion.
