NEW PIPELINE MAY BE CALLED "TURKISH STREAM" - ERDOGAN
YEREVAN, December 11. /ARKA/. The new gas pipeline to be laid down
via Turkey to replace the scrapped "South Stream" may be called
"Turkish Stream", Turkey's president Tayiip Erdogan said yesterday,
as cited by RIA Novosti.
"We decided that the new "South Stream" can be called "Turkish Stream"
as proposed by president Putin", Erdogan said at an oil and gas sector
workshop in Ankara.
The new undersea pipeline will be laid through Turkey to the border
with Greece. Turkey and Europe will be taking as much gas as they need,
this means Turkey will serve an energy hub for the entire region,
according to Erdogan.
Russia's Gazprom natural gas giant signed a memorandum of understanding
with Turkey's Botas on December 1 on constructing an offshore gas
pipeline across the Black Sea towards Turkey. The memorandum was signed
in the presence of the Russian and the Turkish presidents. The new
gas pipeline will have a capacity of 63 billion cubic metres, with 14
billion cubic metres slated for Turkish consumers (identical amount
is being delivered via the Balkan Corridor) and nearly 50 billion
cubic meters conveyed to the border between Turkey and Greece, where
a delivery point will be arranged, TASS reported. -0--
