ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT TO CONVENE FOR EMERGENCY SESSION TO DISCUSS SITUATION IN FINANCIAL MARKET
YEREVAN, December 17. / ARKA /. The National Assembly of Armenia will
convene again today after an extraordinary session to discuss the
situation in the financial market of the country, parliament speaker
Galust Sahakyan said.
The depreciation of the Armenian dram has accelerated this week with
US dollar trading today at exchange offices at 560 drams, up from
the official exchange rate set by the Central Bank at 490.34 drams.
The parliament's emergency sitting is to begin at 4 pm. Some senior
officials are supposed to come out with explanations.
Prime minister Hovik Abrahamyan said in a statement today that amid
the worsening global economic trends the Armenian government continues
to maintain the floating exchange rate of the national currency in
order to protect the economy from the long-term instability.
The statement says the government is supporting the efforts of
the Central Bank aimed at stabilizing the financial market and is
taking all possible measures to ensure the natural functioning of the
financial system and to protect the interests and rights of economic
entities and citizens of Armenia.
"The government is in constant touch with its international partners,
and is confident that by joint efforts we will ensure the stability
of both the financial and the commodity markets and prevent ungrounded
price hike of consumer goods", the statement said.-0-
