IRAN, ARMENIA SIGN NEW ENERGY DEALS

    Mehr News Agency, Iran
    Dec 17 2014

TEHRAN, Dec. 17 (MNA) - Iran's Minister of Energy has said Iran and
Armenia signed contract agreements on construction of hydroelectric
    and wind power plants.

On the sidelines of ceremony of inking the agreement of 12th
Iran-Armenia economic commission in Tehran, Hamid Chitchian said 4
committees were formed on different fields of finance and investment,
banking, transportation, urban development, agriculture, culture,
tourism, health, oil and gas, water, and environment; a special
committee will oversee the establishment of Magri Hydroelectric Power
    Plant on River Araxes.

Chitchian also stated that Iran and Armenia would cooperate in
different economic fields including electricity transfer lines,
environmental issues of River Araxes, railroad to Armenia, and mine
    exploration and operation.

"The recent round of talks resulted in important agreements, which
will bring about expansion of economic and commercial cooperation in
    near future," he added.

Yervand Zakharyan, the Armenian counterpart, expressed satisfaction
with agreements and expressed hope that most articles of the deal,
particularly Magri hydroelectric power plant, enter operation phase
    as soon as possible.

"Iran and Armenia are currently on energy exchange of over 1 billion
kWh annually, however, we hope that the amount would increase
    significantly," the Armenian official added.

On agreement signed with Iran to construct Magri Power Plant, Zakharyan
asserted that preliminary studies of the project had to be finished
by 2015, and the operation phase would start in 2015 or 2016 to last
    for 5 years.

He also noted the environmental issues of River Araxes, saying that
"Armenia has started a reconnaissance process of pollution sources
    in Armenia."
