NATURE PROTECTION MINISTER'S FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE FOR 2014: LAKE SEVAN, PART 3

Nature Protection Minister Aramayis Grigoryan finalized the performance
of the ministry for year 2014 at the press conference held on 22
December.

Lake Sevan
The Nature Protection Minister stated that the level of Lake Sevan
as of 21.12.2014 made up 1900.13 meters, which is lower by 4 cm as
compared with the last year (1900.17m).
'Next year when Arpa-Sevan Tunnel is completely rehabilitated, more
water will be directed to Sevan and we will be able to solve the
problem with the level increase in natural manner,' Minister Grigoryan
mentioned and outlined in 2001 the increase of Lake Sevan level was
around 3.7 meters instead of envisaged 2.81 meters (annually - 21.6
cm). As of today, the indicator of Lake Sevan increase factually
exceeds the statutory by 0.89 meter.
What about the cleaning flooded forest-covered areas, the planned
area of 150 ha has completely been cleaned. Another 150 ha has been
planned to be cleaned in 2015.
What about fish reserve replenishment program Aramayis Grigoryan
noted that in 2014 around 366,700 young fish were let out into Lake
Sevan in 2014.
The studies show that the amount of the whitefish in Lake Sevan had
stabilized as compared with the last year. Recent studies of the
endemic fish species in Lake Sevan, trout, show increase of their
population in the lake.
