Dec 24 2014
Trabzon Police Intelligence Chief Faruk Sarı became the first suspect
submitted to court for request of arrest in 7 years concerning the
2007 murder of Turkish Armenian journalist Hrant Dink.
Upon testifying to the Istanbul 2nd Ä°stanbul Criminal Court of Peace
on duty, Faruk Sarı was released pending trial and potential arrest.
Judge Hulusi Pur imposed a ban on leaving the country on Sarı.
The allegations on the Trabzon Police Intelligence Chief concern the
fact that the murderer of Agos Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Hrant Dink,
teenager Ogun Samast had traveled from Trabzon to Ä°stanbul, thus
the claim is the ex-Trabzon Police Intelligence Unit Chief failed
to protect Hrant Dink's right to live. Sarı will face trial on
"voluntary manslaughter through neglecting to take action."
Other police force intelligence chiefs who had testified included
Sabri Uzun and Ramazan Akyurek. Separately Ä°stanbul Deputy Mayor
Ergun Gungör, İstanbul Police Chief Celalettin Cerrah and Trabzon
Police Chief ReÅ~_at Atay.
The circumstances surrounding Dink's murder has been marred for years
as family and friends of Dink demand justice.
