Armenia, Turkey should establish relations without preconditions -
President Sargsian
YEREVAN. Jan 30
Armenian President Serzh Sargsian said he believes Turkey will open
its border to Armenia if it enters the EU.
"The issue of Turkey's membership in the EU is primarily an issue of
the EU member countries. As far as we are concerned, Turkey's
membership in the EU means the opening of its borders to Armenia,"
Sargsian said at a joint press conference given with Czech President
Milos Zeman in Prague on Thursday.
The press conference was broadcast in the Internet.
"It will be easier for us to deal with a democratic and predictable
country. And being an EU member means just that. We still believe that
Armenia and Turkey should establish relations without any
preconditions," Sargasian said.
In the meantime, Armenia and Turkey currently have no diplomatic
relations. The stumbling stone in the relations between the two
countries are the events that occurred in the Ottoman Empire in 1915.
The genocide of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey in 1915, during which,
according to different sources of information, over 1.5 million people
were killed, has been recognized by several countries. Armenia wants
Turkey to recognize the fact of this genocide.
Turkey, for its part, demands that the Karabakh conflict be resolved
while observing the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
