More than 50 speakers participated in a thematic debate on "War, its
lessons, and the search for a permanent peace" held at UN Security
Council on Wednesday.
The meeting was chaired by Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein,
Ambassador of Jordan.
In his speech, Armenia's permanent representative at UN Garen Nazarian
noted that the process of reconciliation does not imply only signing
of agreements. You need to admit your past in order to achieve
long-term reconciliation.
International experience shows that the nations succeeding in
reconciliation have achieved it through the restoration of justice,
which also includes elimination of the consequences of such crimes.
Ambassador Nazaryan noted the importance of the international
community's unanimous voice against the distortion of history and
denial.
Nazarian emphasized that the crimes of genocides repeat in modern
history becoming the causes of enormous human, political and regional
turmoil. He said that every society should face its past, and
international organizations, parliaments, agencies dealing with human
rights have their role in the process.
Summing up, Ambassador Nazarian called on UN member states to take the
necessary steps in advance of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian
Genocide and to continue the process of recognition and condemnation
of this crime against humanity.
