GAS A TABOO IN ARMENIA - VARDAN BOSTANJYAN
20:27 * 04.02.14
In an interview with Tert.am, ex-MP of the Prosperous Armenia party
Vardan Bostanjyan commented on the four non-coalition parliamentary
forces' proposal to set up an ad hoc committee to study the causes
of Armenia's $300m debt to Gazprom.
"Gas is a taboo in Armenia. No one can answer. Even in Parliament no
one stands up and speaks straight," Bostanjyan said.
With respect to the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) parliamentary
group member Gagik Minasyan's statement that the four non-coalition
forces are, in fact, interested in misleading the public, he said:
"Gagik Minasyan is a most balanced person. But he has to defend the
powers that be. He cannot be neutral. But what show are they speaking
of? Tell me, please, why should I pay so much for gas?"
As to Minister of Energy Armen Movsisyan's statement that "air cannot
be mixed with gas, and gas meets the requirements," Bostanjyan said:
"Is Armen Movsisyan's saying the universal truth? He claims that
nothing can be mixed in our petrol. And this concerns not only gas
or petrol. But he is expected to say so."
As regards the statement that Russia intends to reduce prices for
oil and oil products, as well as for rough diamonds, for Armenia by
about 20%, Bostanjyan said:
"I am well aware that the entire post-Soviet area is extremely
vulnerable in some respects. Now, however, the phenomenon of joining
any union, especially one under Russia's control, lack of transparency,
corruption risks, monopolies, lack of competition - all of which
we have here in Armenia - I think the situation will improve in any
way. Yes, Russia has the resources and, if it has provided them to
us as an ally, we cannot mislead our population by concealing from
it the real price and amount."
As to the "merits and demerits" of the prices for products after
Armenia's joining the Customs Union, Bostanjyan said:
"I know that essential products will not rise in price. We should
not speak of only customs duties. Armenia is a small country with
a limited potential. And the large states that are members of the
Customs Union cannot create a hard situation for Armenia."
