German officials' statements on the Armenian Genocide suggest that
the country is adopting new approaches to the issue, according to an
Armenian expert.
Commenting on Chancellor Angela Merkel's recentcall on Turkey to
confront its past and open the border with Armenia, Ara Papyan,
the director of the National Academy's Genocide Institute, said the
country is very likely to express a more clear position on the issue
in the near future.
"One thing is becoming clear about Germany, judging by the statements
of not only Merkel, but also other officials. I see Germany adopting
a new approach to the Genocide issue," he told reporters on Wednesday.
The expert said that Germany, which has itself had a difficult history,
is voicing such an opinion considering its past, urging a country
wishing to join the EU to admit the dark pages of its history.
