100 YEARS SINCE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE: NEW STORIES TOLD - SERZH SRAPIONYAN

About 100 years have passed since the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman
Turkey, but people are still telling their families' stories, Armenia's
Deputy Minister of Diaspora Serzh Srapionyan told Tert.am.
Descendants of Armenian Genocide survivors are living in Armenia,
especially in Talin. They provide materials to the Armenian Genocide
Museum Institute.
"We are now preparing a convention with representatives of the peoples
that survived the genocide - 28 of them. We have invited them to
Yerevan. We have a Diaspora Chair at the Department of Philology
of Yerevan State University. We have asked the head of the chair to
dedicate all the historical and literary materials to the topic. Our
young people are well informed and it will be of interest to them,"
Spapionyan said.
"For example, a student put a question about the causes of the Armenian
Genocide in a country where 20 peoples lived at that time. He arrived
at most interesting conclusions. Serious work is being carried out
now. Time will show if we can carry this work through and draw the
international community's attention. This is our end," Spapionyan said.
The chairmen of committees on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian
Genocide are expected to hold a meeting in Brussels soon, which will
be followed by a news conference.
"A big press conference is to take place this September for journalists
to improve their skills in covering the recognition of the Armenian
Genocide," he said.
With respect to political figure Khachatur Sukiasyan's proposal
that the Armenian government, public and political organizations,
including the diasporic ones, make a nation-wide call for "One more
child in each family," Srapionyan said that the Ministry of Diaspora,
too, proposed that each Armenian family have three children.
"As far as I know we have grave problems. Financial problems must be
resolved to stimulate birthrate. The nation is faced with serious
demographic problems. It is a very good proposal, but I would like
them to have a more realistic basis," he said.
Each Armenian's task is properly commemorating the Armenian Genocide
victims on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the event,
Srapionyan said.
