UTILITY REVOLUTION AND MONEY UNDER THE PILLOW
Utility bills for December have puzzled people. According to the
Haykakan Zhamanak, gas bills are 8 billion drams more and electricity
bills are 1 billion more compared with last December 2012.
People are said to request reconstruction of their debts to be able
to pay them gradually. Galust Sahakyan advises people to save on
other things, such as food, clothes, etc. The banks may think of
a new product, lending people money for paying for utilities. Like
Samvel Alexanyan's supermarkets sold food on credit.
The Armenian government is innovative enough. They will think of
something, especially that the high-ranking officials are said
to pay no utility bills. Their huge debts are compensated at the
expense of other users through manipulating meters, blowing air
into gas and other methods. Notably, whenever a representative of
the government is "disfavored", the press immediately reports huge
utilities debts. Or it becomes known that their businesses were not
paying for the utilities. An example is the ex-member of parliament
Hakob Hakobyan nicknamed Choyt.
How long will people stand? What will the critical point be? So far the
government has gone away with all inadequate price increases because
people either emigrate or get the money that they kept under their
pillows to avoid a revolution. In fact, the Armenians have serious
stereotypes about the money under the pillow. One can remember the
1990s when people threw out of the window the Soviet banknotes that
had lost their value. And it was a shame for an Armenian not to have
money hidden under the pillow. And the Ottoman Turks, Russians, the
Armenian government have in turn grabbed that money thus suffocating
every riot with a pillow.
