Turkey says 'bold steps' of Armenia, Diaspora to begin 'new era'
Armenia cannot accept the notion of "just memory" being advanced by
the Turkish leadership in regards to the 1915 Genocide, President
Serzh Sargsyan stated during a meeting with members of the Armenian
community of Argentina on July 7.
Last month Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu wrote in an article
published by the Hurriyet Daily News that "a new and more grounded
era of peace will reign between Turkey and Armenia if intellectuals
and politicians do their part to overcome the psychological barriers
on both sides and to build a 'just memory'."
While the Turkish leadership speaks of the need for a 'just memory'
between Armenians and Turks, by the next step it is trying to
undermine justice, putting an equality sign between one and a half
million innocent victims, mostly elderly, women and children, and
the Turkish military who died as a result of adventurous actions
orchestrated by the leaders Ottoman Empire, said Sargsyan, as quoted
by his press office.
"It is not a 'just memory'. We cannot accept such 'just memory'. In
fact, this is an updated, improved, re-packaged version of the policy
of denial of the Armenian Genocide," the Armenian leader emphasized.
Expressing his conviction that the day when Turkey will face its
history is not far away, Sargsyan said that Armenia will continue
activities towards achieving ininternational recognition and
condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.
"But we have to respect the memory of our ancestors, not only through
bringing our struggle till the end, but also by strengthening our
homeland using the talent and capabilities of every Armenian for the
benefit of the Homeland," the Armenian leader stressed.
