ARMENIA FACING SYSTEMIC NOT PARLIAMENTARY CRISIS - OPINIONS

The crisis in Armenia is systemic rather than parliamentary, says
Narek Galstyan, the leader of the Social-Democratic Hnchakyan party.
“The country needs serious and drastic changes, but parliamentary
elections are not the only way to demonstrate it,” he told
Tert.am, expressing his disagreement with an earlier remark by an
opposition MP.
Alexander Arzumanyan, a former foreign minister who now represents the
opposition Heritage faction in parliament, said at a news conference
on Thursday that he does not think Armenia is facing a political
crisis that would necessitate snap parliamentary elections.
“By and large, I do not agree with Mr Arzumanyan that it
isn’t realistic to speak about a parliamentary crisis at the
moment. My opinion is that the country needs constitutional reforms
more,” Galstyan said, commenting on the remark.
The Democratic Motherland party’s leader, Petros Makeyan, said
he sees a multilayer crisis in Armenia. He cited the country’s
political situation, absence of justice and the society’s
helpless situation as major problems.
“All this is the sum effect of the ruling regime. So to find a
way out it is necessary to get rid of the regime. All this stems from
the parliamentary crisis, so I don’t think snap parliamentary
elections would change anything. What our country needs is systemic
reforms,” he said, considering Armenia’s parliament
an unaccomplished institution failing to respond to the society's
urgent needs.
The leader of the Conservative Party of Armenia, Mikael Hayrapetyan,
said he believes Armenia is facing a real crisis. “But I cannot
say what percentage of that falls to the parliament’s lot,”
he told our correspondent.
