Ã¥xpert: Kazakhstan raises issue of Armenia's customs borders because
of its partnership with ôurkey and Azerbaijan
YEREVAN, July 22. /ARKA/. Gagik Harutyunyan, head of Noravank Science
and Education Foundation, is convinced that Kazakhstan has raised the
issue of Armenia's customs borders because of its partnership with
Turkey and Azerbaijan.
"This is a geopolitical problem, and Kazakhstan has to defend Turkey
and Azerbaijan's interests, since they are its close partners," he
said on Tuesday answering ARKA News Agency's question.
It seems the matter is already settled, he said, and Kazakhstan,
taking into account its own interests is no longer objects to
accession of Armenia to the Eurasian Economic Union.
The expert also stressed that Armenia's authorities has obstacles in
its way to the Eurasian Economic Union membership - their reluctance
to set up checkpoints between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh Republic's
territory and the Karabakh problem.
On May 29, at a session of Eurasian Economic Council in Astana,
Kazakhstan, the Armenian president expressed Yerevan's intention to
join the Eurasian Economic Union agreement until June 15. However,
appropriate papers have not been signed so far. At the same session,
Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev demanded that the treaty on
Armenia's accession make clear that Armenia is joining the EEU with
its internationally recognized borders that do not include
Nagorno-Karabakh. He said this demand was conveyed by Azerbaijani
President Ilham Aliyev in a letter sent to him and presidents of
Russia and Belarus. The demand presumably means that the Armenian
government will have to start taxing goods imported from Karabakh.
Armenian authorities have ruled out such a possibility.
On July 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at a meeting of
Russian diplomats, said Armenian will become a full member of the
union very soon.
In resent days, media outlets quoted Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerlan
Idrisov as saying that the agreement between Armenia and Eurasian
Economic Union is likely to be signed in October 2014 at a regular
meeting of Eurasian Economic Union countries' presidents in Minsk.
