Putin calls for Armenia's soonest entry in Eurasian Economic Union
ASTANA May 29
- Russian President Vladimir Putin hopes that Armenia will join the
Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) soon. Putin has made a statement to this
effect after the EEU Treaty was signed in Kazakhstan's capital,
Astana, on Thursday.
"We hope that Armenia will be able to become a full-fledged and
full-right EEU member after the Union is launched," the Russian leader
said. A treaty on Armenia's accession to the EEU "should be approved
and signed soon," Putin believes.
Speaking at a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan proposed to sign a treaty on
Armenia's entry in the EEU before June 15 so that that country would
become a full-fledged member of the union starting from 2015.
