Armenia's former president and current opposition leader Levon
Ter-Petrosyan leveled harsh criticism at current head of state Serzh
Sargsyan over the constitutional reform proposed by his administration
that he implied was a concealed attempt to secure a continued stay
in power.
Speaking about the planned reform in April President Sargsyan
emphasized that if the reform was carried out he would not seek to
remain president after the end of his second and final term in office
in 2018, nor would he take up the post of prime minister that would
hold real executive power under the reform.
In an extensive article published by ilur.am on Thursday Ter-Petrosyan
dismissed such assurances. "Under these moving words in reality...
Sargsyan will be modestly satisfied with the powers of the "Secretary
General" of his [ruling] Republican Party so as to ensconce himself in
the chair of the National Assembly Chairman with a patriotic mission
and thus eternalize his power," he commented sardonically.
Ter-Petrosyan also described Sargsyan's current policies as a "roadmap"
for Armenia's destruction, warning other political forces against
becoming part of them. At the same time, he said that if the matter
goes as far as a referendum on the amendments to the Constitution, then
this referendum should be turned into a "demonstration of all-national
distrust, the last and decisive stage of the change of power."
In the article Ter-Petrosyan also criticized the current president
for his recent appointment of Hovik Abrahamyan as prime minister. He
claimed that Abrahamyan's main mission is to enable the ruling
regime to continue "plundering" the nation and rigging elections. "He
[Sargsyan] could have hardly found a better candidate than Abrahamyan
for organizing those things," he said.
The ANC leader also criticized Sargsyan's foreign policies, in
particular, Armenia's stance in the current process of accession to
the Customs Union and the emerging Eurasian Economic Union.
"Serzh Sarkisian is ready to make any concession, accept, without
objections, any document put forward by Russia and endure any
humiliation for the sake of joining the Eurasian Union as quickly as
possible and winning [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin's favors,"
Ter-Petrosyan charged.
He emphasized that the Armenian leader suffered one such humiliation
last week when Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev set a
pro-Azerbaijani condition for Armenia's accession to the union by
calling on its membership within the United Nations-recognized borders,
i.e. without Nagorno-Karabakh.
