How the Russian troops emptied Shahumyan region for Azerbaijan

June 13 Initiative including intelligentsia, civil scientists,
veterans and other activists held their first event on June 13. The
name of the initiative is meant to mark the events that took place in
1992 when on June 13 the Russian troops launched an offensive on the
region of Shahumyan and emptied it of Armenians. On the same day 22
years later the initiative held its first meeting.

One of the participants of the initiative, political scientist Igor
Muradyan announced that it is important to give a legal and political
evaluation of what happened in Shahumyan in 1992. According to him,
the Russian armed forces emptied the region for Azerbaijan, which was
a planned action and was to continue through entire Artsakh.

Igor Muradyan stressed that a legal and political evaluation of what
happened in Shahumyan is especially important amid the ongoing
developments and the international situation as Russia again endangers
the interests of Armenia with its policy. Igor Muradyan said the topic
of Shahumyan is a taboo. Both the Armenian and the Russian governments
    keep this matter secret.

According to him, a few years ago an attempt was made in the circles
of the Russian Duma to bring up this issue but the answer to these
attempts was that special people are dealing with it and nobody else
    should be dealing with it.

Today we can see how these people are dealing with this problem, Igor
Muradyan said, noting that the problem has been forgotten. According
to him, those people are known to everyone, they have lived in welfare
all these years, they have been decorated and awarded.

Igor Muradyan said the legal and political evaluation of displacement
of Armenians from Shahumyan by the Russian troops is important from
the point of view of the issue of Artsakh. According to him, the
Armenian side has never included the issue of North Artsakh in the
agenda of negotiations, and there was a criminal mindset that our
issue would be resolved more easily and quickly if we give away some
territories, namely Getashen and Shahumyan. Igor Muradyan said the
purpose of June 13 initiative is to retrieve the issue from oblivion
and take this important step towards regaining the independence of
    Armenia.

Witnesses, people of Shahumyan and veterans, told about the
developments of Shahumyan. Gayane Hayrapetyan who used to live in
Shahumyan said after the Russian troops attacked, they left the
village, reached Artsakh across the forests of Gulistan, suffering
    losses on the way.

The commander of Arabo detachment Manvel Yeghiazaryan confirmed that
in Shahumyan the Russian troops fought against them. According to him,
those troops were armed well. Manvel Yeghiazaryan said General
Shamanov and his militants landed in Shahumyan. Shamanov is now the
commander of the Russian landing troops in Russia.

Veteran Edik Markosyan told how their reconnaissance in Shahumyan
found high concentration of Russian troops who attacked Shahumyan and
the adjacent villages a few days later. According to Markosyan, they
could not fight against the well-armed Russian troops and they only
resisted until the people could retreat into the forest and leave.

Veterans say they have lost a lot of friends-in-arms in unequal
battles with the Russian troops. They were killed and are missing.
Manvel Yeghiazaryan says there is a misperception that the armed
forces won in Artsakh with the help of the Russians. He says this
insults the Armenian veterans who won due to their will power and the
Russians helped Azerbaijanis. Manvel Yeghiazaryan said the Armenian
forces won, mostly easily, where no Russian troops were fighting on
the side of Azerbaijanis though the latter outnumbered Armenians.

Ethnographer Hranush Kharatyan told her notes on the stories of the
people of Shahumyan. A man of Shahumyan who was 12 during those events
told how the Russian soldiers shot the last people leaving the village
in a Willis car. The child fell of the car with the others but did not
die and understood that he should keep quiet. He lay quiet under the
car and listened how the Russian soldiers shot the people, then
climbed the cherry trees and ate cherries. Hranush Kharatyan says the
man who was 12 then told her this picture remained in his memory.

June 13 Initiative announced that their activities will be continuous,
and they will hold new events to draw the attention of the society to
this issue and include it on the agenda.
