ARMENIAN PRESIDENT'S "COMPLIMENT" TO TURKISH COUNTERPART AND ITS IMPLICATIONS
12:19 â~@¢ 20.06.14
"Turkish President Abdullah Gul is a broad-minded person, who is well
aware of his state's real interests."
The aforecited statement Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan addressed
to Turkey's president during the Interview program on the Public
Television of Armenia has largely been interpreted and discussed as a
"compliment" by official Yerevan, Mihran Hakobyan, lecturer at Yerevan
State University, told Tert.am.
Hardly anyone noticed serious implications in that simple sentence.
Moreover, that statement was addressed to Turkish Premier Recep
Erdogan in a negative sense rather than to President Abdullah Gul in
a positive sense.
"[He] is well aware of his state's real interests." This is what
Armenia's president says of his Turkish counterpart. But focus your
attention on the word "real."
What are the real interests the Erdogan camp is unaware of? The
establishment of relations of a new quality with neighbors, and the
development of a policy of open borders and civilized discussions.
Finally, the implementation of the "zero problems with neighbors"
fundamental program authored by Turkish FM Ahmet Davutoglu, which
program was frustrated by the Erdogan cabinet.
Erdogan's policy of preconditions is known to have played a key role
in the freezing of Armenia-Turkey rapprochement process (much has been
talked about it). And that very fact was signaled by President Serzh
Sargsyan in his interview, which, regrettably, has not correctly been
perceived by many.
It should also be remembered that that was not the first such statement
Armenia's leader addressed to his Turkish counterpart. In his statement
on the frozen ratification of the Armenian-Turkish protocols, Armenia's
president expressed special thanks to President Abdullah Gul for
his constructive position, with implied criticism of Premier Recep
Erdogan's destructive approaches. Time will show the real aims of that
step. One thing is clear: before April 24, 2015, official Yerevan will
be making new steps, and the first signs of such steps can now be seen.
