March 4 2014
Munich - There was only going to be one winner of the bundesliga.com
vote for Matchday 23's Player of the Week, with Borussia Dortmund's
Henrikh Mkhitaryan clearly dominating the post-match poll.
The Armenian playmaker's outstanding performance in BVB's 3-0 win over
1. FC Nurnberg, which included both a goal and an assist, earned the
25-year-old a whopping 67 per cent of the vote.
'Always believed'
Mkhitaryan was all smiles after his persistence and belief paid off
against a defensive Nurnberg side. "I always believed I would get
my goal," said the 25-year-old. "In the end, it worked out and I was
even able to set one up, so I'm delighted with that."
It was goal number six and assist number eight of the season for
the Armenian, who has taken the Bundesliga by storm and proven he
has what it takes to fill the boots of Mario Gotze, who joined FC
Bayern Munchen in the summer. Mkhitaryan insisted he would not be
getting carried away, however. "It's still going to be a difficult
path ahead," he said.
Lewandowski in second
Mkhitaryan provided the assist for Robert Lewandowski's 64th-minute
goal at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday. The Poland international came
second in the vote with 14 per cent, three ahead of FC Bayern Munchen's
Arjen Robben, who received eleven per cent of the vote following his
hat-trick against FC Schalke 04.
1899 Hoffenheim's Anthony Modeste came fourth with seven per cent
after his inspirational display in the 6-2 humbling of VfL Wolfsburg,
while 1. FSV Mainz 05 goalkeeper Loris Karius and SV Werder Bremen
match-winner Zlatko Junuzovic shared fifth place.
