ARMENIANS FOUGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE TOGETHER WITH GREEKS - PARLIAMENT VICE CHAIR

    March 26, 2014 | 17:32

YEREVAN. - March 25 is the Greek National Day. On that day in 1821,
the Greek nation achieved its independence.

The representatives of the Greek community in Armeniacelebrated the
Greece National Day with an afternoon event, in which Armenia National
Assembly (NA) Vice-Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov and Greek Ambassador
    Ioannis Taghis also participated.

"Greeks were the first to fight for independence against the Ottoman
domination. The Armenians, together with Greeks, were fighting for
    the independence of Greece.

"And this was symbolic because, in the late 19th century and the early
20th century, when the Hamidian massacres and the subsequent genocide
[of the Armenians] took place, the Greeks, together with the Armenians,
fought against the Ottoman domination," the NA vice chair noted.

Sharmazanov also congratulated both the Armenians and the Greeks
because, in his words, the destinies of the two nations are similar.

For his part, Ambassador Taghis said that Greeks live in various
communities in Armenia, and stated that he is happy that they live
in a country which is linked to Greece with centuries-old friendship.
