PRELATE CALLS FOR URGENT SUPPORT FOR KESSAB
We continue to closely follow the escalating crisis in Syria,
particularly in Kessab which a week ago came under attack by rebels from the
Turkish border. Soon after the incursion, Kessab was emptied as residents
were forced to flee for their lives. Kessab Armenians have sought refuge at
St. Mary Church in Latakia, where they are receiving shelter and assistance
from local officials and organizations.
In light of these developments, throughout the past week religious
and community leaders have been in constant communications to discuss means
of support for Kessab.
In this respect, on the night of Wednesday, March 26, H.E.
Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, and ARF Western U.S. Central
Committee Chair Dr. Viken Hovsepian traveled to Washington, D.C. where on
Thursday they joined the ANCA and a delegation of community leaders and
members for meetings with State Department officials, calling on them to
condemn the attacks on Kessab and Turkish involvement, demand withdrawal of
the rebels and the safe return of residents to their homes, provide
assurance for the ongoing protection of the area and humanitarian assistance
to the displaced residents, demand Turkey secure its border and stop
supplying arms to rebels. Earlier in the day, the Prelate and Dr. Hovsepian
met with Armenian Ambassador Tatoul Markarian.
By the ordinance of the Prelate, on Sunday, March 22nd, "Der
Voghormya" prayers were offered in Prelacy Churches for Kessab and for a
peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict.
On Sunday, March 30th, there will be a special collection plate in
Prelacy Churches to raise funds for the basic needs of the refugees of
Kessab, including food, shelter, clothing, and medical supplies.
The Prelate hereby calls on our community to lend their utmost
support to relief efforts for our Kessab brothers and sisters, who were
forced to leave behind their homes and belongings with nothing but the
clothes on their backs, and are now in dire need of any and all assistance
as they struggle to cope with the current situation. Through the Syrian
Armenian Relief Fund, together we can alleviate the extreme hardship facing
our beloved brethren of Kessab.

MID-LENT CELEBRATION AT ST. SARKIS CHURCH IN PASADENA
Wednesday, March 26, 2014 was the mid-point of Lent, or Michink. On
this occasion, following Sunrise Service in Prelacy Churches, a number of
luncheons were held throughout the community. H.E. Archbishop Moushegh
Mardirossian, Prelate, presided over Sunrise Service at St. Sarkis Church in
Pasadena, and later over the Michink luncheon organized by the ARS Pasadena
"Sosse" Chapter.
The theme of the Prelate's sermon was "Lord, keep us on the path to
peace. Guide and lead us and all Your believers, so that we may go toward
peace and eternal life." His Eminence stated the halfway mark of Lent is a
time to reflect on what promises of self-awareness, self-examination, and
self-improvement we made at the start of Lent and where we are today in that
spiritual journey. The Prelate prayed for the Lord to steer us, as
individuals and collectively as a nation, to the path of peace and
righteousness, and that we may be worthy of receiving eternal life by
keeping His commandments, by loving Him fully with all our heart and soul,
and by demonstrating goodwill to our fellow man. His Eminence wished that
during the second half of Lent we renew and reaffirm our pledge and prepare
ourselves to welcome the Glorious Resurrection of Christ with strong faith
and clean hearts and souls.
The Prelate concluded his sermon by inviting the faithful to join in
"Der Voghormya" prayers for our brothers and sisters in Syria, and
especially for Kessab Armenians who face an uncertain future after having to
flee their homes following attacks by rebels from the Turkish border.
The ARS "Sosse" Chapter's Mid-Lent luncheon followed at the Pasadena
Armenian Center. The Prelate blessed the tables, delivered his Mid-Lent
message, and commended the ARS for their service and contributions to
Armenian life. His Eminence also made a special appeal for the guests to
lend their support to our compatriots in Syria, and to Kessab Armenians in
particular.
On Friday, March 28, the Prelate will preside over Vigil Service at
St. Mary's Church in Glendale. The service begins at 7:00 p.m.
