The passions are running high in the southern town of Goris (Syunik
region) in the run-up to the mayoral elections set to take place next
month.
The tensest campaign is expected to be between two of the four
nominated canidates: Ara Budaghyan and Tigran Karepetyan, both
self-nomineess.
`The society in Goris takes sides with candidates Ara Budaghyan and
Tigran Karepetyan,' Robert Hakobyan, a close acquaintance of former's
family, said in comments to Tert.am.
According to him, the town is interested in the elections, as most of
the population expects reforms.
The mayoral elections in Goris as slated for June 8. May 9 was
declared the deadline for nominations. The campaign is thus among four
contenders: Tigran Karapetyan, Hrayr Yolyan, Ara Budaghyan and
Vachagan Adunts. Mr Yolyan is a member of the Goris City Council. Mr
Adunts's candidacy was proposed by the ruling Republican Party of
Armenia.
The polls are widely perceived to be a fight between the old and new
though the leading candidates and their closest allies dismiss such
allegations.
Ara Budaghyan is a relation of a former mayoral candidate, Avo
Budagyan, who was killed last year in a tragic gun attack outside the
house of Surik Khachatrayn, the then governor of Syunik who later
resigned from post.
Budaghyan's self-nomination is linked to the deadly incident. The fact
was also confirmed by an informed source which preferred to remain
unidentified.
As for Tigran Karapetyan, the other leading candidate, he said his
decision to join the electoral campaign is linked to his concerns over
the problems in Goris. He warned against seeking political motives
behind his self-nomination.
`I don't think anyone else's nomination in the local self-government
elections will bring about any political change. My nomination at
least is not politically motivated,' said the candidate.
The voting age population in Goris say they believe the former
regional governor backs Mr Adunts, with his successor, Vahe Hakobyan,
taking sides with Karapetyan, who is reported to be a close friend of
his.
