Maksim Shevchenko, a member of the Russian Presidential Council
for Interethnic Relations, said that the latest developments in
the South Caucasus, Armenia joining the Eurasian Economic Union,
activation of Russian-Azerbaijani diplomatic relations and the round
of Nagorno-Karabakh peace talks held in Paris on Monday are victories
for Russia and Azerbaijan.
Shevchenko noted that the visit of Russian Defense Minister Sergey
Shoygu to Baku was a demonstration of the cooperation between the
two countries.
He highlighted the meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian Presidents
Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan in Paris as a victory of Russian
diplomacy, despite the fact that it was organized by French President
Francois Hollande. It was a great victory of Russia in the context
of the shooting in the summer and autumn, he added. Another proof of
Russia's victory, according to Shevchenko, is that fact that Armenia's
membership of the EaEU is not a threat to Azerbaijan.
The expert clarified that Armenia will join the Customs Union based on
the borders recognized by the UN, not the contact line of forces. He
predicts that the customs regime is a complicated issue that will be
resolved constructively.
Shevchenko emphasized that Europeans and Americans were deliberately
making a settlement of the conflict impossible. Agreements should be
made with Russia, Iran and Turkey, he proposes. The official reminded
that there had already been consultations with Tehran and Ankara.
