WE HAVE A LOT TO DO AHEAD OF GENOCIDE CENTENNIAL, SAYS US-ARMENIAN HISTORIAN

Richard Hovhannisian, a US-Armenian historian and scholar specializing
in Middle Eastern and Armenian history, has addressed the outcomes of
the recent Armenian studies conference and the activities and events
he considers important ahead of the Genocide centennial.
"We have a lot to study, but unfortunately there are very few people
specializing in Ottoman and Turkish studies. They [Turkey] will
prepare for the centennial better then we, arranging everything on
a higher state and institutional level. We must attach importance to
such events. We have to add new spirit to what has been always done,"
he told reporters, sharing his impressions of the meeting.
The historian said he regrets that the potential of the Diaspora's
progressive youth is not fully used to make the Armenians' demand
stronger. "In the United States, France, Argentina and other countries,
we have young generation who are skilled and already highly experienced
in their country's media and other sectors. But those young people's
potential isn't used, as they do not maintain ties with the Armenian
community and are not organized. So we have to attract the new
potential to add a fresh spirit to the Armenian Issue instead of
conducting the annual memory events or scientific conferences which
are, of course, always important. But the occasion has now arrived to
attract a new potential. That's a difficult question, as those people
are supporters of old manners and do not feel particularly enthusiastic
about the idea. But I find it important," Hovhannisian added.
