Brussels, October 9, 2014. - Today, the EU - Armenia Friendship Group in
the European Parliament President, Member of the European Parliament, Dr.
Eleni Theocharous visited Armenia, accompanied by her aide, Dr. Ioannis
Charalampidis, Professor Bernard Coulie of the Catholic University of
Leuven, and European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy
President, Mr. Kaspar Karampetian.
In Yerevan, the delegation visited the Armenian Genocide memorial of
Tzitzernagapert, and held meetings with the President of the Republic of
Armenia, Mr. Serzh Sargsyan, President of the National Assembly of the
Republic of Armenia, Mr. Galust Sahakyan, and Standing Committee on Foreign
Relations chairman, Mr. Artak Zakaryan.
MEP Theocharous was honored by a medal of gratitude from the National
Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
The delegation discussed issues of Armenia - EU relations in light of the
latest developments in the region, the crisis in the Middle East and the
persecution against the local minorities especially in Syria, and Iraq.
Nagorno - Karabakh's conflict settlement, and Turkish - Azerbaijani
aggression against Armenians was also a subject of discussion.
It should be noted, that the delegation will be heading to Nagorno -
Karabakh Artsakh on Saturday, and will be holding talks with the leadership
of the country, as to how pursue best the recognition of Artsakh in Europe,
boost the tourism of the country and other matters. A memorandum will be
signed between Artsakh State University and the Catholic University of
Leuven.
"Such high level meetings with the leadership of Armenia and Artsakh are
always important for us. Armenia has honest friends in Europe who
strengthen Armenia's positions in the Union and we are looking for more
enhanced cooperation in the coming years, in the fields of academia and
education", said Kaspar Karampetian, President of the European Armenian
Federation for Justice and Democracy. Karampetian praised the National
Assembly of Armenia for honoring MEP Eleni Theocharous, a long time ally of
Armenia and Artsakh.
Next week two different events will take place in the European Parliament.
Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte's book "*Nowhere, A Story Of Exile*" will be
presented, giving voice to the hundreds of thousands of Armenians
persecuted in Azerbaijan, and most notably, the celebration of the 23 years
of Nagorno - Karabakh's independence. Later in the month of October, the
movie "*Tevanik*" of Jivan Avetisyan will be screened in Europe.
