Armenia launches education excellence program

The Armenian president on Saturday announced the launch of a national
education excellence program.
In his speech at the opening of the Gyumri Industrial Park, Serzh
Sargsyan said that the idea aims to raise the pedagogues' role in the
society, making the teaching profession attractive to highly-trained
human resources.
"The program is being implemented in accordance with international
standards and based on a training program offered in the Armenian
language to ensure a corresponding level of qualification for teachers
... The national education excellence program is expected to give
international certification to around 2,000 teachers in Armenia in a
decade. They will become changers. The schools will launch a network
encouraging the up-to-date methods of teaching. A rich resource center
will be established to assist the teachers' community in improving the
teaching content and skills. It will help harmonize the local and
international educational standards and localize the best
international experience in Armenia," the president said.
He added that the idea will be addressed in more detail by Minister of
Education and Science Armen Ashotyan, who is going to hold a
conference on the topic.
Priest Mesrop Aramyan, who has had a considerable contribution to the
project (as an advisor to the president on educational issues and a
member of Ayb school's Board of Trustees), said the initiative is
aimed at raising the competitiveness of education in Armenia by
bringing its standards in compliance with international requirements.
"We prepared considerably for this project, concluding agreements with
internationally acclaimed educational institutions, such as the
Cambridge University and the London [University's] Institute of
Education. The Cambridge University operates in 125 countries around
the world, and the educational reform in many states was implemented
by them. To have a powerful future, we clearly need a corresponding
education and human resources. And for that, we obviously need
high-quality teachers," he noted.
